How We Work

Our Approach

Everything we do is built on genuine relationships, close collaboration with schools and families, and an unwavering belief in every young person we work with. Here's how that looks in practice.

School Partnership

Working Alongside Schools

We don't work in isolation. From day one, we establish a close partnership with the school, the young person's family, and — crucially — the young person themselves. Together, we create a tailored plan that reflects their individual needs, builds on their existing relationships with school staff, and sets clear, shared goals.

This collaborative approach means that the work we do with each young person is never happening in a vacuum. Northway Education maintains regular contact with schools throughout every programme — sharing progress updates, flagging anything relevant, and adjusting the plan as the young person develops. Schools always have a direct point of contact and are kept closely informed at every stage.

The result is a joined-up approach that amplifies impact — for the young person, for their family, and for the school.

Outcomes for Schools

Young people supported by Northway typically show:

  • Improved attendance and punctuality
  • Reduced disruption in the classroom
  • Better engagement with learning
  • Improved relationships with teachers and peers
  • Increased self-belief and motivation

The Evidence Base

Social, Emotional and Cognitive Development

At the heart of our approach is the understanding that young people cannot learn effectively unless they feel safe, connected, and regulated. One-to-one mentoring provides exactly this: a consistent, trusted relationship that becomes a secure base from which a young person can begin to grow.

Through positive rapport with their mentor, young people experience — many for the first time — what it feels like to be truly heard and understood by a caring adult. This experience is transformative. It creates the conditions for genuine social, emotional, and cognitive development to take place.

Over time, and at their own pace, young people develop the skills and inner resources they need to navigate the world more confidently — in school, at home, and beyond.

Young People Develop the Ability to…

Through sustained mentoring, young people build the capacity to:

  • Regulate their emotions more effectively
  • Respond calmly to difficult situations
  • Seek help from trusted adults
  • Attend and focus in lessons
  • Build and maintain positive friendships
  • Engage with learning in a meaningful way
  • Problem solve and think flexibly

Our Philosophy

Building the Foundations for Growth

Before a young person can engage with education, they need to feel safe. Before they can build relationships, they need to experience what a trustworthy, consistent one looks like. Our relationship-first approach puts this at the centre of everything.

We understand that many of the young people we work with have experienced disruption, instability, or a sense that they have been failed. Our role is to change that narrative — to be the adults who show up, who listen, and who don't give up. From that foundation of trust, real growth becomes possible.

This isn't a quick fix. It requires patience, consistency, and genuine commitment. But when it works — and it does — the changes in a young person can be profound and lasting.

Our Approach in Practice

Every programme is built on these core principles:

  • A focus on the individual and their unique needs
  • Early intervention before difficulties escalate
  • Responding to behaviour as communication, not defiance
  • Relationships placed before curriculum at every stage
  • Activities that are calming, consistent, and predictable
  • An environment where young people feel valued and safe
